With profound sadness, family and friends are mourning the unexpected passing of Amanda Ashley Callahan, who died on May 24, 2026, in Greenwood, Indiana, at just 26 years old. Her loss has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, yet her memory continues to shine through the countless lives she touched with her kindness, compassion, and unwavering love for others.
Born on June 4, 1999, in Aurora, Illinois, Amanda was the cherished daughter of John and Barbara Callahan. From an early age, she embraced life with curiosity and enthusiasm, exploring a wide range of interests and activities. Whether participating in softball, dance, piano lessons, or learning guitar, Amanda approached every new experience with an open heart and a willingness to discover where her passions might lead.
Amanda attended Yorkville High School, where she was an active member of the school choir. Her love of learning later led her to pursue studies in neuroscience at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis, reflecting both her intelligence and her fascination with understanding the world around her.
While Amanda had many interests, nothing brought her more joy than animals. Her deep affection for pets and her commitment to their care became a defining part of her life. She found meaningful work at Dogtopia, where she spent her days surrounded by dogs and fellow animal lovers. Friends and coworkers recall her genuine happiness while caring for animals, noting that she brought warmth and dedication to everything she did.
Outside of work, Amanda embraced life fully. She enjoyed horror movies, attending concerts, reading books, playing video games, and searching for bargains while shopping. Her vibrant personality, unique sense of humor, and authenticity made her unforgettable to those around her. She was unapologetically herself and inspired others to do the same.
Amanda’s greatest pride was often found in caring for the animals she considered family. She was a devoted pet mother to her dogs, Ryder and Dogmeat, as well as her beloved cats, Rukia, Toph, 2B, and many others she cared for throughout her life. Her home and heart were always open to animals in need.
She is survived by her loving parents, Barbara and John Callahan; her brother Jake Callahan and his wife Leah; her niece Emma Callahan; her longtime partner Chris Purvis; and a large circle of extended family members and friends who will forever cherish her memory. She was preceded in death by her grandmother Kazuko Callahan and grandfather Don Carlson.
Even in death, Amanda’s generosity continued. Through organ donation, she gave the gift of life to others, creating a legacy of hope and healing that reflects the compassionate spirit she embodied throughout her life.
A remembrance gathering will be held on June 13 at Majestic Highlands Homestead in Batavia, Illinois, where loved ones will come together to celebrate Amanda’s life, honor her memory, and share the countless moments that made her so special. Though her life was far too short, Amanda Ashley Callahan’s legacy of kindness, love, and selflessness will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
