Authorities have identified the five young victims who lost their lives in a devastating single-vehicle crash that has left the Santa Maria community in shock and mourning.
The Santa Maria Police Department confirmed that the victims were 16-year-old Isabella Star Vigil, 17-year-old Nicolas Munoz-Gautreaux, 19-year-old Jennifer Gutierrez, 16-year-old Guendi Beatrice Gamez Escalante, and 17-year-old Yusbeli Diaz Galvez. All five were occupants of a vehicle that crashed shortly before 1:40 a.m. on June 7 near the intersection of South Broadway and Miller Street.
Crash Details
Investigators reported that the vehicle was traveling along South Broadway when it left the roadway and struck a traffic signal pole with significant force. The impact caused severe damage to the vehicle and prompted a large emergency response involving police, firefighters, and paramedics.
Officials confirmed that four of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene. A fifth victim was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center but later died from their injuries. A sixth occupant, identified as 24-year-old Aurelio Calixtro Matias, survived the crash but remains hospitalized in critical condition.
