Santravious Shermaud Westry Arrested After Teen’s Fatal Shooting in Huntsville

A 19-year-old man has been arrested and charged with manslaughter after a fatal shooting that killed a 16-year-old boy inside a home in Huntsville, police said.

According to the Huntsville Police Department, officers responded to a call around 2:35 a.m. on Tuesday in the 4900 block of Lumary Drive reporting a shooting in progress. When they arrived at the scene, they found a 16-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound inside the residence.

Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators with the department’s Major Crimes Unit later identified the suspect as 19-year-old Santravious Shermaud Westry of Huntsville. Police confirmed that the victim and suspect were cousins.

Authorities said Westry was inside the home with the victim and had picked up a firearm intending to show it when it accidentally discharged, striking the teenager. Two other individuals present at the time were detained for questioning during the initial stages of the investigation.

Westry was subsequently arrested and booked into the Madison County Jail on a manslaughter charge. The investigation is still ongoing.
